To refer to ai3 as an agency merely tells part of the story. In actuality, ai3 is an collaboration of disciplines, values, and personalities. Think of it as one part agency to three parts collective. ai3 was founded, in part, on the principle of organized chaos, an idea that works best when multiple voices are present. As such, the individuals of ai3 bring a wide range of expertise and ideas to the table. Skilled architects, interior designers, product designers, artists, and musicians, they are a diverse and highly functioning collaborative, unified by a common set of values and a desire to create. |

As a founding Principal of ai3, it is safe to say that Lucy Aiken-Johnson, ASID, IIDA, put the “i” in ai3. A practicing Interior Designer since 1994, Lucy has won numerous awards for interior design and product development. Her appreciation for her craft stems from her understanding of design as a powerful problem-solving tool. As such, Lucy is known for her ability to articulate design solutions by telling the stories behind them.
A natural narrator, Lucy has earned a reputation for being an engaging presenter and speaker. With all things, her approach is to tell the story behind her ideas, stories which are deeply informed by Lucy’s intelligence and attention to detail. Her talent for design is reinforced by her dedication to research. For Lucy, research is critical and often reveals the individual details that add character and establish setting. In 2008, the American Society of Interior Designers presented the prestigious ASID Georgia Chapter Design Achievement Award for her significant career portfolio of exceptional design work and for her dedication to excellence in interior design. Lucy was featured with her firm, ai3, Inc. in the national publication, Contract Magazine, as Young Designers to watch. Over the course of her career, she has received numerous ASID design excellence awards and in 2008 was honored with Interior Design magazine’s “Best of Year” award for her product designs with Pallas Textiles.
In 2009, Lucy founded ai3 studio, an extension of ai3, Inc. A certified women’s business enterprise (WBE), ai3 studio provides architecture, interior design, and product development services. Over the course of her career, she has designed interiors for corporate, restaurant, retail, hospitality, showrooms, and large-scale cultural arts center clients. She has led numerous product development teams, designing multiple textile collections and architecturally-inspired furnishings.

For Patrick Johnson, AIA, architecture has a responsibility to people. A founding Principal of ai3, whose career portfolio ranges from children’s hospitals, cancer centers, and senior centers to restaurants, corporate offices and product development, Patrick has designed environments and products with the goal of improving lives.
Working in architecture and design since 1993, Patrick is known for his fresh perspective, always finding unique entry points to projects. His strengths lie in his ability to connect with people one-on-one, and for his willingness to step back and ask simple questions that often lead to project breakthroughs.
Clients relationships are significant to Patrick Johnson. He recognizes the value in his clients’ input and fosters strong professional relationships by relating to his clients what to expect in the design process. An accomplished artist, Patrick Johnson can quickly turn a thumbnail sketch into a recognized project or diagram components of a project to illustrate the “big idea” to a client. In 2006, Patrick was named one of Atlanta’s “Top 20 Under 40” designers by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine. His personal paintings are displayed at MasonMurer Gallery in Atlanta.

A founding Principal of ai3, Dan Maas is an accidental ambassador for design. His clever wit and friendly demeanor allow him to speak across disciplines, working easily alongside fellow designers as well as with contractors, inspectors, and clients. People trust Dan, and he takes that trust to heart. Working in architecture and design since 1995, Dan has managed award-winning projects in commercial, corporate and restaurant design.
One of Dan’s greatest strengths is his ability to balance design integrity with the realities of implementation. Because of the strong relationships he’s built with contractors, Dan has gained significant insight into the often challenging world of construction. His attention to detail has earned him the respect of his colleagues and clients, as he steers projects from beginning to end with no aspect overlooked.

For Joe Remling, AIA, design and architecture are part of a larger appreciation for global culture. A world-traveler with an independent streak, Joe has experienced, first-hand, the power of architecture to affect history. As a founding Principal of ai3, Joe Remling brings a deep reserve of architectural fundamentals to the team, coupled with a bold imagination. Working in architecture and design since 1995, Joe has designed and managed projects that range from residential design to large-scale public spaces, including the Georgia Aquarium and the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Joe is known for his ability to balance the impact of individual design elements with their role in the bigger project. This ability to scale in and out allows Joe to develop ideas quickly and to “uncomplicate” the process by communicating simple and clear design strategies.
Beginning in September 2011, Joe Remling will be leading ai3’s transcontinental presence. As managing partner of ai3’s San Francisco studio, Joe will oversee existing projects along the west coast. At the same time, he will be working to expand ai3’s geographic presence and to establish innovative project partnerships.
Joe has been involved in several award-winning projects. He recently acted as curator for Passione Italiana, Design of the Italian Motorcycle at the Museum of Design Atlanta and has been a guest lecturer at the High Museum of Art, Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, and the Art Institute of Atlanta. As an active member of the design community, Joe seeks out opportunities to support design education through student mentor programs and public education events.

Kerry Wittwer is a tinkerer. For most of her life, she’s held a fascination for how things come together and work, so it seems fitting that, at age seven, she knew she wanted to be an architect. Since beginning her career in architecture and design, Kerry has developed a reputation for her technical aptitude. She is also known for skill, creating drawings that communicate the story. Kerry is a LEED-accredited professional with experience in corporate office, large-scale mixed-use, interior hotel renovations, international work and information technology. She has been instrumental in leading ai3’s LEED-Certified projects, including Tandus Flooring’s Atlanta showroom, ai3’s offices, and the offices and manufacturing facility for Cobham Composite Products. Kerry earned a bachelor degree in architecture from the University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design, where she served for two years as president of the student chapter for Construction Specifications Institute and, during which time, she led a session at the CSI National Convention in Los Angeles.

For Ethan Lewis, architectural design was never a definitive goal, it was natural progression. It began with the forts he built as a child and progressed into a small business designing dorm rooms in college. A post-college stint as a bartender gave Lewis reason to rethink the efficiency and sustainability of bar design, which ultimately led to a brief career as a bar design consultant. The compelling pursuit of sustainable design led Lewis to take on the role of Sustainable Consulting Intern for Southface Energy Institute before realizing his dream of working with ai3.
Every role and experience in Ethan Lewis’ life seems to inform the next. Through all of it, he exudes a passion for making things better, and, wherever possible, a little bit more fun. Lewis’ wit and steadfast sense of exploration have made him a welcome addition to the ai3 team, all the while adding new dimension and perspective to the ai3 process.

As someone who has experience with a wide range of projects, Chris Carfora has a deep appreciation for the details that make design work. Whether his focus has been on small interior spaces or large-scale convention centers and hi-rise buildings, Chris has learned to value the technical aspects of architecture. For Chris, architecture is an inside-out process. It begins with thinking creatively about the way things come together. In doing so, the work evolves organically.
Since coming to ai3, Chris Carfora has enjoyed being part of a team that also works well together. Being involved with the client from the very beginning isn’t something most project architects experience. But, at ai3, Chris has seen what a difference it makes, both for the architect and the client.

Matt Weaver began drawing pictures of houses in the second grade. Becoming an architect was almost inevitable. But, as a musician too, Matt has a unique perspective of architecture. Like music, he says, architecture and design are ways to communicate with the world. Just as music is an expression of culture and perspective, architecture and design represent human thought. A set of drawings, for example, is as much a conversation as a static plan. For that reason, process is as important as product. It’s cultivation,” says Matt. “You plant a seed, and you help it grow.”
For Matt, this philosophy is scalable. Just as a single structure can speak to individual purpose, cities are evidence of the way people live and interact. During his undergraduate studies, Matt, spent a year abroad studying architecture at L’ecole de la Villette in Paris. It was a pivotal experience and illustrated the profound effect that culture can have on architecture. Paris, says Matt, is obviously beautiful. But even more so, Paris taught him how a city should feel.
